Botox Myths Debunked

Over 6.5 million Botox patients last year show that this popular treatment not only works, but has lasting appeal. However, while demand for Botox has grown steadily since its FDA approval in 2002, its history remains plagued by misconceptions. Understandably, this keeps many people, who could otherwise benefit, from undergoing treatment.

Below, we’ll explore the Botox myths that continue to scare people away from this safe, effective way to rejuvenate your appearance, smooth wrinkles, and even treat migraines.

Myth #1: Botox Freezes Your Face

This might be the single most detrimental, and outdated, myth concerning Botox. While it is true that Botox relaxes the face by halting muscle contractions, the vast majority of patients are still be able to perform their entire range of expressions after treatment, as long as the injections are administered accurately by a professional. In fact, Botox can even be used to reduce the display of features perceived as negative, like frown lines or furrowed brows.

Myth #2: Botox Injections are Poisonous

Botox’s full name, botulinum toxin type A, also raises some concerns for many people. After all, the name literally contains the word ‘toxin’ and carries some unfortunate connections with the disease botulism. Botox is indeed produced from the same family of bacteria that causes botulism. However, under the control of a trained medical professional, botulinum toxin type A uses the bacteria’s paralyzing symptoms for good, hence its FDA approval. Despite its unfortunate name, Botox is ultimately a safe and reliable solution.

Myth #3: Botox Has Long, Complicated Recovery Times

As with any medical procedure, many worry about making mistakes during aftercare and causing unwanted complications. However, Botox recovery times are not only quick, but relatively simple. Aftercare typically requires very little from the patient, and the most important precautions only apply to the first 24 hours. The professional administering your injections should provide you with a list of instructions to help ensure proper healing.

Myth #4: Botox is Only Used for Cosmetic Purposes

Most patients that receive treatment do so for cosmetic purposes, but Botox has key medical applications as well. For those who suffer from frequent migraines or chronic headaches, Botox’s paralyzing effects can provide some much needed relief. When injected into the neck and facial muscles responsible, Botox can alleviate some of the symptoms caused by their constant spasming. This also gives migraine sufferers a much needed alternative to dangerous painkillers.

Myth #5: Botox Injections Are Painful

While it’s true that minor bruising can sometimes occur at the injection site, Botox injections are typically quite painless. In fact, the needles used to inject Botox are so small and fine that numbing agents are often unnecessary. Many patients hardly notice the needle before the injection is finished, and as long as strenuous activity and blood thinners are avoided for 24 hours after treatment, bruising can easily be kept to a minimum.

Myth #6: Only Expensive Plastic Surgeons Can Provide Botox

Botox requires a relatively quick and straightforward procedure, allowing plenty of medical professionals to receive the training needed. That includes your local dentist. In fact, your dentist is ideally suited to providing Botox treatments both effectively and safely, as they already have extensive knowledge of facial anatomy, years of experience, and the necessary equipment.

We hope that breaking these myths down has eased some of your Botox worries. For Dr. Wes Mullins and the My Family Dentistry team, your comfort is as important to us as how youthful and attractive your Botox treatment will make you feel. If you have any questions about the Botox treatments we provide, feel free to contact us right away.
