Botox & Dermal Fillers

From wrinkles to migraines, Dr. Wesley Mullins can help give you the results you want with Botox.

See If Botox Is Right For You

What is Botox?

If you’re looking into treatment options for frown lines and crow’s feet, you’ll likely come across Botox in your search. But what is Botox, exactly?

Botox is the name brand of a neurotoxin produced by the bacterium Clostridium botulinum. Don’t worry about the word “toxin”—C. Botulinum is only dangerous in very large amounts. Scientists have discovered how to use its active ingredient, Botulinum Toxin Type A, in a way that is completely safe and FDA-approved by using only tiny, diluted doses.

In trained and experienced hands (like those of your dentist, who has extensive medical and anatomical knowledge of facial muscles), Botox injections are quick and easy. The appointments can even be made over your lunch break. The results are natural, without making you look frozen or unexpressive. The fear of your face being immobilized is based on an outdated myth.

Botox injections can help you achieve a smoother, more youthful complexion while retaining your full range of expression. And it’s not just used for cosmetic issues—because Botox is essentially a muscle relaxer, many of our patients use Botox to help with migraines or face and neck pain.

Why Choose a Dentist for Botox?

An experienced dentist has years of professional history attending to the delicate systems of tissue, nerves, and muscles in the mouths and faces of countless patients. Dentists are also already thoroughly familiar with performing injections for anesthesia and simply require further specialized training to learn the correct methods for applying Botox therapy and aftercare. Therefore, it isn’t a far leap for dentists to complete the necessary instruction and begin providing treatments.

Apart from the extensive educational and practical background that dentists have, many already offer cosmetic treatments like teeth whitening, veneers, and dental implants. While Botox and dermal fillers aren’t strictly speaking dental procedures, they are part of an expanding skill set that dentists are in an excellent position to master and offer to their clients. What’s more, your dentist is already familiar with your patient history and allergies, and is invested in your health, so they are well suited to offer advice and answer questions with your specific needs in mind.

Meet Julie - Our Botox Champion

I’m Julie, Reg Dental Hygienist, RDH, BS. I’ve been working with Botox patients for 3 years and continue to learn more all the time. I work chair-side with Dr. Mullins to provide patients with recommendations and treatment.

As a dentist, Dr. Mullins is the ideal health professional to provide Botox injections, because he fully understands and embraces the entire facial skeleton, including muscles and nerve innervation, which in turn helps him to provide the most natural-looking results. To ensure comfort for our patients, we can also anesthetize the treatment area, making delivery nearly painless.

I am now a believer in Botox and Juvéderm because I see what they do for my skin, fine lines, and wrinkles, and how they make me feel. We all do things to make ourselves feel better, like improving our diets, exercising, using hair dye, and applying makeup. How are Botox and Juvéderm any different?

If you have questions about Botox treatments, we can walk you through preparation, injection, and aftercare to find out if Botox is right for you.

Botox: From Wrinkles to Migraines

Many people don’t know that Botox has applications apart from your appearance. Because it safely and effectively stops targeted muscles from contracting, Botox can also be used to provide relief for people with migraines, tension headaches, and jaw and neck pain.

When these painful symptoms are the result of muscle tension or spasms in the head or neck, Botox can be a more effective treatment than painkillers, and without as many risks. Due to its long-lasting effect, it can ease these symptoms for months at a time, which explains why so many patients turn to Botox for headache relief over other treatments.

Look better. Feel better. Be confident.

Botox Aftercare

Here’s what you can do to help ensure a fast and painless recovery from your Botox procedure:

1. Move Your Face (A Little)

To help settle the Botox into the injected muscles and decrease the risk of it shifting, gently exercise the treated areas on your face for the first hour after treatment. Without overdoing it, practice certain facial expressions, raising your eyebrows, and smiling to keep the affected muscles from feeling stiff.

2. No Pressure

For the first 24 hours, you should try to interfere with the injection sites as little as possible. To minimize pressure on sensitive areas, avoid the following.

  • Sleeping on your face
  • Facial massages
  • Pressing or rubbing too vigorously
  • Wearing hats or headbands

3. Avoid Strenuous Activity

Raised blood pressure can encourage bruising and swelling in the hours after your treatment. As part of your Botox aftercare, avoid strenuous activity, lying down, and staying in overly hot environments, like saunas, for at least three hours.

4. Limit Alcohol and Other Blood Thinners

Alcohol and blood thinners can make your face more susceptible to bruising during the first 24 hours after the injection. If you do experience some tenderness or a slight headache after Botox, ask your dentist about over the counter painkillers that can providing temporary relief without thinning your blood.
