Dental Implants

While considering tooth replacement options, you’re bound to have questions about dental implants. What Are Dental Implants?

There are serious risks when it comes to missing teeth, but there are also replacement options that can give you back a full, beautiful smile. Dental implants deliver the same look and function of natural teeth, blending in seamlessly so that you can eat, drink, and speak with ease.

At My Family Dentistry, we offer solutions that will give you back a strong, healthy smile. Dental implants, which provide the most natural look and feel, are often the best option for replacing missing teeth. They’re incredibly durable and don’t require much more than regular hygiene – brushing, flossing, checkups – to maintain. For many patients, dental implants can last for the rest of their lives, making it easier to eat, drink, speak, and grin for photos.

How Do Dental Implants Work

Implants are the ideal way to replace a lost tooth, particularly in the front of the mouth, where a gap would be most visible. Unlike bridges or removable dentures, which sit on top of the gums and can chafe if not fitted properly, dental implants become part of your mouth.

Dental implants require a surgical procedure to anchor them to your jaw. The implant fixture, made of titanium or another biocompatible material, is placed in the jaw and topped with a ceramic cap for the appearance of a tooth growing up through the gums.

Implants can be used to replace any number of lost teeth and even people with no teeth can benefit from them. They are a stronger, more comfortable alternative to dentures. Even better, they don’t require constant adjustment or removal at night.

Why you need Dental Implants

Your dental health is just as important as your physical and mental wellness. But when you’re missing a tooth (or several), keeping your mouth healthy becomes more difficult. Without tooth replacement, the jawbone can lose density and weaken. The surrounding teeth and gums become more vulnerable to harmful bacteria and disease. And that’s all on top of the discomfort and self-consciousness you may already be experiencing.

At My Family Dentistry, our team is experienced in helping patients understand and undergo dental implant therapy. Dr. Mullins provides thorough and knowledgeable dental care – he invests in continuing education and in the latest surgical and technological advances, passing the benefits on to his team and patients every day.

Your Dental Implants Consultation

Dr. Mullins at My Family Dentistry can make the tooth replacement process easy to understand. At your consultation, you’ll receive an in-depth assessment that includes 3D radiograph imaging and an examination of your gums, teeth, and jaw to determine whether you’re a good candidate to undergo oral surgery.

A dental implant consultation is vital to beginning your journey to a healthier mouth and smile. It’s also a valuable tool in helping you decide whether this solution is right for you.

From your first visit to post-surgery aftercare, we’re with you every step of the way. During your appointment, Dr. Mullins will assess the overall health of your gums, teeth, and jaw to determine if you’re in good shape to undergo the procedure.

When you make an appointment for dental implant surgery, you’re going to spend about an hour in the office, from the time you walk in and the time you walk out. It can take longer for the local anesthesia to numb the area before starting, but in general, it doesn’t take a lot of time out of your schedule.

Dental implant surgery has its share of discomfort, but we take great care to numb the area beforehand and use the least invasive techniques so that pain is minimized. We’ll also provide instruction for managing your pain effectively (usually with rest and over the counter medication) until you’re fully healed.
